Free Memory drops down dramatically

Post by dennisw »

Hello,

Every time i go to system info on my Nvidia shield 2019 tv pro the free memory goes from 1290MB eg to 600MB in a couple of minutes.

Are there addons that you know about that cause memory leaks?

I look at the Kodi logs and see warnings on several repositories like djaythemes about being out of date and could cause problems in the future.

https://paste.kodi.tv/dolanaliro has more information.

I do not know enough to know what most of it means and what I could do personally to rectify any issues so I am please asking for help

Looks normal, Kodi has always used a lot of ram. Using advanced settings will also use more ram. Those errors in the log are also normal, just a Kodi warning about 3rd party repos. Whats the actual issue your having?

Thanks for the reply

I do not use advanced settings as you said it is not always the best idea to do so.

I do get the occasional kick outs as well as buffering and when I check RAM it has gone way down to about 401MB and as soon as I go out of Kodi and come back it is up to around 1200MB then just rapidly go down again.

It is like a vicious circle. I must state that this does not happen all the time though.

At this point I am not sure that my adding a 1TB SSD external storage has made a difference to my shield

Im having the same issue. I have gone with 500gb external storage and that dont seem to fix the problem. my problem and i am keeping an eye on free memory and memory used percentage.
Yesterday while streaming 4k hdr with atmos say 40 or 50gb file the free memory was stable at 5-600 mb and percentage was at 70-80.
Now when i ended stream numbers were 800 and 73percent.
Last night and today tv shows were watched maybe several
I come out now and check the free memory is at 231 mb and memory used 92percent untill i go to streama 4k movie and it crashes.
I reboot kodi and stats are back up
Memory is about 1100 mb and 64 percentage.
what are these things and why does it happen? Is there a way to stop it from happening? It seems like these high numbers are good and help with stability and good performance but when the numbers get low or the free memory, I mean gets low and the memory used percentage gets high. It’s starters gets choppy even the navigation menu along with the stream buffering crashing.
is there anything I can do change or look into any resolutions?
Also my set up is shield pro 2019 with ethernet fios gig and i have a regular download speed of 600mbps.
Also here are my current caching settings
What would be a good caching set up?
Right now i have buffer all filesystems includint local files
Memory size caches entire file on disk storage (thought I would give us a try) but what does it mean.
I did try and was using 384
Read factor 5x and chunk size 128kb
kindly help and direct
I always leave my shield on and Cody running. I don’t wanna always have to restart Cody to fix this. It’d be nice to sit down and turn on the TV kodis already there and I can just stream.

Well first of all, you said yourself that you turned on caching settings to buffer all filesystems, which means you are making it use more ram right there. So delete any advanced settings and go to Kodi settings/services caching and set that to defaults also. Then try rebooting Kodi and check the levels again. I agree that 92% seems a bit high. And also But just as a test, I completely deleted the build and all data and checked the free ram in system information in Kodi with absolutely nothing installed, and guess what, the ram usage is still 64% on my Shield, and thats with nothing installed. You gotta remember, the Shield is good, but it still only has 3GB of ram at the end of the day. Another thing to consider when your looking at Kodi System information is this value is not just for Kodi, it is showing the memory usage for everything installed on your Shield.. "The "System memory usage" value displayed in Kodi's System Information section reflects the total memory usage of the entire system, not just Kodi itself.
This metric shows the combined memory consumption by all running processes on the device, including the operating system and other applications, not solely Kodi."

Im guessing theres something else running on your Shield also that is eating your free ram. I so far have not seen this issue on my Shield. I also never touch advanced settings. I would try deleting some of those dodgy apps you might have installed on your shield and see whats causing the high memory usage. You can see in this pic, more ram is obviously better..

Or even better a mini pc?

Gig ethernet and i figure decent storage and more importantly ram. Since ive been working with shield pro with 3gb of ram
How about 8 or 16 or more?

A PC will always run Kodi better than any Android box. If you have a laptop, install Kodi and test it on that. However, something else must be going on because I also use a Shield and dont see these issues. Is it possible you have external storage installed on your Shield? If so, that can be causing issues if your trying to run Kodi on an external drive. Can you give me an example of what exactly your playing when you have these issues?
